Debby is a self-taught wood and materials artist who works primarily with birch tree bark. Her most noted objects include vases and containers, as well as handmade journals with extensively customized covers. The journals are hand bound with fine papers, and different layers of the birch bark are used to create an array of colors to make designs, weaves and scenes on the covers. Her depictions of moose, trout, canoes, and her inclination to use birch as an art material is no doubt related to her residence in Alaska, Canada and Northern Michigan. Prior to her current “birch art” era, Debby and her husband owned and restored various Victorian homes, including the Hanson House Bed & Breakfast in Grayling.
